On this day in 1776 the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress. The declaration itself let Great Britain know that the American colonies were tired of being ruled by them and that America wanted to become its own country.
Americans felt the need to fight for their independence from Great Britain because they were forced to be taxed by the British for tea and had to allow British soldiers to stay in their homes. This is what spurred the Revolutionary War, which started in 1775.
Although the Declaration of Independence was approved by Continental Congress on July 4th, 1776 the war continued until we finally defeated Great Britain in 1783.
Sadly America today embraces a lot of the ideologies our forefathers fought against. We once fought against a $0.03 per/pound tax on tea but today an $0.18 tax per gallon of fuel is acceptable. We send our money to other countries before we take care of our own. This is done under the guise of humanitarianism but any intelligent person knows it is politically motivated.
So while we spend this July 4th celebrating the freedoms that 25k – 70k men of our country died for, remember what we’re celebrating and don’t let their sacrifices go in vain.
